Intraoral Camera

Intraoral camera in Silver Spring, Md.

Dentistry has changed a lot in the past two decades! Dentists have many state-of-the-art tools to help patients. Dr. Allen Gotora and the staff at Stellar Dental use the intraoral camera to make sure patients have the best oral health possible.

What is an intraoral camera?

intra-oral-cameraAn intraoral camera is a very small camera — about the size of a dental mirror — that also has a light on it. The dentist can put it into the patient’s mouth and get a close-up look at the condition of the teeth and gums. The image from the camera is projected onto a monitor.

What are the benefits of an intraoral camera?

Years ago, if patients had a problem with their tooth or gums, the dentist would tell them they would need treatment and that was the end of that. Now, with the intraoral camera, the dentist can show the patient exactly what the problem is and why the treatment is needed.

It also helps the dentist to spot any problems that may be easy to miss with the naked eye. The intraoral camera can take pictures of a patient’s teeth and gums “before” and “after” a treatment. When you have a crown or some other treatment it can be difficult to see the results of the procedure, the camera makes it easy to see what exactly was done.

If you need to see a specialist, or you need to have a procedure approved by your insurance company, pictures from the intraoral camera can quickly and easily be emailed. This saves time for the patient and the staff at the dentist’s office. And, emailing the images has a benefit for the environment as well e-mailing them is much better than having to print out images and mail them.

If a patient is consistently forgetting to brush or floss in one area, this will be revealed with the intraoral camera. Dr. Gotora can point out this area and advise the patient on how to better brush and floss to prevent decay.

When will the intraoral camera be used?

Dr. Gotora will use the intraoral camera during your regular exam and cleaning. Of course, this is only part of the exam!

He and the staff at Stellar Dental will perform: an evaluation of the gums for any problems, such as gum disease; a thorough cleaning to remove plaque and tartar; an oral cancer screening; a check of your face, neck and lymph nodes for signs of any abnormalities; an evaluation of your bite to make sure your top and bottom teeth align properly; and an evaluation of any restorations, such as a dental implant or filling, to make sure they are in good condition.

You can trust Dr. Gotora and the staff at Stellar Dental to keep your teeth healthy with modern tools, such as the intraoral camera and with good old-fashioned dentistry techniques as well!
